Southern Herald is an independent, non-profit news agency which focus on accountability journalism with a vision to help strengthen Nigeria’s democracy, advance public institution, and rights of the people, promote and enhance cultural customs while standing up for best practices, human rights, openness, and good governance—all of which are characteristics of a contemporary democratic state.

WE ensure that the linguistic barriers are bridged in transparency reporting in Nigeria.

Southern Herald Contributor Guidelines

1. Introduction
Southern Herald is dedicated to investigative journalism that promotes accountability and transparency. We publish in English and various Nigerian languages, including Yoruba, Igbo, Edo, Ijaw, Pidgin, and Hausa. Contributors should align with our mission to deliver well-researched, factual, and impactful reporting.

2. Editorial Standards

a) All stories must be thoroughly researched, fact-checked, and ethically reported.

b) We value investigative depth—reports must go beyond surface-level news.

c) Articles should uphold integrity, avoiding bias and sensationalism.

d) Attribution and citations for sources are mandatory.

3. Submission Requirements

  • All contributions must be original, unpublished work.
  • Stories should be written in clear and accessible language, considering our diverse audience.
  • Include relevant visuals, if available (infographics, images, or supporting documents).
  • Contributors must submit their work samples for professional verification.

4. Language and Accessibility

  • Stories will be published in English and other Nigerian languages.
  • Contributions should be translated where necessary to enhance accessibility.
  • Pidgin English submissions should maintain journalistic quality.

5. Ethical Guidelines

  • Strict adherence to journalistic ethics is required (truthfulness, accuracy, fairness).
  • Confidential sources must be handled with utmost care.
  • Contributors must disclose any potential conflicts of interest.

6. Collaboration Opportunities
Southern Herald encourages collaboration with journalists through Hostwriter’s network. Contributors may be connected with local and international reporters for cross-border stories.

7. Compensation & Copyright

  • Writers retain rights to their work but grant Southern Herald permission to publish.
  • Payment terms will be communicated based on assignment scope.
